Youth Leadership and Action Program

Do you live in the Bay Area? Are you between the ages of 14 and 22? Do you have one or more LGBT parent? Do you want to make a difference? Then YLAP is for you!

Be a part of the second fabulous year of the COLAGE Youth Leadership and Action Program (YLAP) –a group for youth with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and/or transgender parents ages 14-22. The program offers participants a chance to gain skills and experience in activism, media, public speaking, program development, and more while being able to connect with others with similar experiences.

In addition, YLAP participants select group action projects to focus on for the year. YLAP members gain experience in leadership and action through volunteering in a variety of ways including speaking engagements, media work, and mentorship of younger kids with LGBT parents. YLAP includes monthly meetings, special events and trainings, volunteer activities and lots of fun! Youth who participate in YLAP are eligible to earn a stipend.

This program will only be successful with the active participation and input of its participants. YOU will decide which projects to take on, which area you would like to have trainings in, and how YOU want to make a change! Monthly trainings and meetings will provide participants with new skills to then select and carry out projects as a group. In our first year, the participants in YLAP focused on raising awareness in schools and the community and accomplished this goal through media and public speaking trainings, peer education workshops, the design and production of educational posters, and the creation of the first art exhibit created by youth with LGBT parents. To attend a meeting or get more information, please contact Meredith Fenton, COLAGE Program Coordinator at thatssogay@colage.org.
